Rails with trails
Transportation – of both people and goods – accounts for 27% of Nova Scotia’s greenhouse gas emissions, emissions which cause climate change. Although many of Nova Scotia’s rail corridors have been abandoned to date, a revival of rail transportation may be necessary to help us reduce our production of greenhouse gas emissions. Rail transport is far more fuel-efficient than road transport. For example, large trucks use five to nine times as much energy as rail per tonne-kilometre. Combining rails with trails is one solution for facilitating both active and rail transportation within a rail corridor. An example of a successful rail with trail corridor exists in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Other successful examples exist in Ontario and Quebec.
